For context, Jesus was in a boat crossing a body of water.
Mark 4:37-40 “A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’ He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?'”
I dissected this by reading it a few times this morning and listening to what God was trying to teach me. Here is what I got.
“The waves broke over the boat, it was nearly swamped” – Think of a situation in your life that feels overwhelming. Almost to the point where quite literally all hope is lost. It is a common situation to be in haha.
“Jesus was sleeping” – Our savior is completely unbothered. So unworried that he is able to be sound asleep on a cushion. Currently uninvolved.
“The disciples woke him” – He was sleeping until he was called. He does not get involved until we ASK!
“Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” – Humans freaking out as we do so often.
“Quiet, Be still!” – Jesus, the one with all authority over heaven and earth, simply fixes an “impossible” problem. Any problem that we as humans freak out over.
“Why are you so afraid?” – Emphasis on the word “so”. He dramaticized their fear, as if to point out the foolishness of being afraid. I believe the question goes deeper. I believe he is questioning the depths of their hearts saying, “Don’t you believe I am who I say I am?”
The question for you is the same. Do you believe he is who he says he is? If God can do this with the wind and the waves, elemental forces, how much more can he deliver you from your own internal storms. Just ASK!
